Neighbourhood Children's Council (N.C.C.), Mumbai

Background

It is commonly found in urban Mumbai that people from different States of India with varied backgrounds of culture, religion and upbringing live in a cosmopolitan neighbourhood. The Mumbai RSCJ community of 3 live close to 130 families in an apartment making it is easy to relate to them on a daily basis. Some children come from the neighbouring apartments too. All the children come from middle class families and study in English-medium schools.

Skill-based training for marginalised rural women and youth through the "Community Polytechnic Scheme"

Background

Sophia Polytechnic, Mumbai, is one of the institutes selected under the "Community Development through Polytechnics" scheme of the government of India which helps in skill development of persons of the weaker sections of society in order to provide them with the possibilities for either employment or self employment so that they can earn their livelihood. Under the Community Development Scheme, the province has five rural centres where they run specific skill-based courses.

Environmental Sustainability at Sophia Polytechnic's and Sophia Bhabha Hall

Background

At Sophia Polytechnic, as part of our efforts towards the care of the Mother Earth, we installed a composter for wet garbage in January 2018. Following this, in 2018-2019, we installed solar panels to generate electricity to cover a part of the requirements of one unit of Sophia Polytechnic and that of Sophia Bhabha Hall which serves all Sophia campus institutions.

Sophia Nursery Balwadi

Background

Balwadi is an Indian pre-school run for economically weaker rural sections of the society, either by government or NGOs. Balwadis were developed as a part of the government of India's poverty alleviation programme by universalising education. The Sophia Nursery Balwadi was started in 1990.
