Partnership with Traidcraft

Background

Following the experience of some RSCJ in Thailand with fair trade initiatives, some of the ENW province sisters approached the Traidcraft charity. 

Objective

To raise awareness about fair trade 

Activities  

  • talks on fair trade, including the RSCJ experience in Thailand with Traidcraft,
  • Fair trade sales days in the Province, in schools, parishes and churches

Manna Society Homeless Centre, London Bridge

Background

Homelessness has been a concern in London in time. The Manna Society Centre opened in 1983 to respond to the daily food needs of homeless people in the area of London Bridge. 

Objectives

To support homeless people near London Bridge.

Activities

  • cooked meals for the homeless people
  • medical services for the homeless people
  • collection of clothing for the homeless people and those in hostels

Literacy for ESL learners

Objective:

To improve the English language of migrant women in London

Activities:

  • teaching English
  • provision of a teaching room

Outcomes

  • Migrant women have improved their language skills.
  • Migrant women feel comfortable with their English and comfortable applying for benefits.
  • Migrant women have better understanding of their children school activities and help them with their homework.

Fenham Association of Residents (FAR)

Background

Fenham, Newcastle (northern England) is a council estate where there is high unemployment, considerable deprivation and a high incidence of crime. 

Objective

To improve the quality of life for the members of the local community of a council estate (Fenham, Newscastle) by helping people go futher, providing support, direction, hope, encouragement and praise.
