Overview

Objective

Migrant integration in the southwest island of Gran Canary.

Activities

Activities are implemented in the basement of the RSCJ community house.

  • Legal advice (all year round)

A lawyer comes once a week to the centre to respond to legal issues. Highlights migrants their rights and obligations

  • Literacy lessons (from October to June)

Some migrants have never been to school.

23% of the enrolled students

  • Spanish and cultural lessons (from October to June)

2 Spanish levels:

Beginner: 60% of enrolled students

Advanced beginner: 10% of enrolled students

Day trips to Spanish cultural museums (tomato museum, Colonial museum) and local gradens

  • Food Handling lessons

Outcomes:

  • Yearly, around 60-100 students improved their Spanish skills.

  • Migrants acquired self-confidence and autonomy to run daily errands and affairs.

  • Greater social integration of migrants.

  • Increased their potentiality for employment: yearly, around 5-10 migrants acquired food handling skills.

  • Improved relationships between migrants of different faiths.

  • Improved gender relationships between migrants.

 

 

El objetivo

La integración de los inmigrantes en la isla suroeste de Gran Canaria.

Las actividades

Las actividades se llevan a cabo en el sótano de la casa comunitaria de RSCJ.

I. Asesoramiento legal (todo el año)

  • Un abogado viene una vez a la semana al centro para responder a cuestiones legales. Destaca los derechos y obligaciones de los migrantes

II. Lecciones de alfabetización (de octubre a junio)

  • Algunos migrantes nunca han ido a la escuela.
  • El 23% de los estudiantes matriculados

III. Clases de español y cultura (de octubre a junio)

  • 2 niveles de español:
    • Principiante: 60% de los estudiantes matriculados
    • Principiante avanzado: 10% de los estudiantes inscritos
  • Excursiones de un día a museos culturales españoles (museo del tomate, museo colonial) y a estudiantes locales.

 IV. Lecciones de manipulación de alimentos

Los resultados:

  • Anualmente, alrededor de 60-100 estudiantes mejoraron sus habilidades en español.
  • Los migrantes adquirieron confianza en sí mismos y autonomía para hacer los mandados y asuntos diarios.
  • Mayor integración social de los migrantes.
  • Aumento de su potencial para el empleo: anualmente, alrededor de 5-10 migrantes adquirieron habilidades de manipulación de alimentos.
  • Mejoraron las relaciones entre los migrantes de diferentes religiones.
  • Mejora de las relaciones de género entre los migrantes.

Migrants. 80% of the students are women and 20% male. 90% of them are of African origines.

RSCJ have been responding to migrant needs since 2010. In previous years, RSCJ offered their premises to a local NGO, Las Palmas Acoge, so they could respond to migrant needs. 

 

 

 

 

Las RSCJ llevan desde 2010 respondiendo a las necesidades de los migrantes. En años anteriores, las RSCJ ofrecieron sus instalaciones a una ONG local, Las Palmas Acoge, para poder responder a las necesidades de los migrantes.
