Overview

Background

In 1999, the need arose in Portugalete (Bilbao, Basque Country) to attend the needs of the immigrants who were arriving in our town, almost all of Colombian origin. They arrived in very precarious conditions in search of work. Most of them were women who had left their parents, siblings and children behind. Many were pioneers, others were trying to reunite their families and above all to make a decent life for themselves. Since 2001, many more have arrived from other Latin American countries; they are young couples or single mothers with small children, many of them born in the Basque Country. Almost all of them work in domestic services. Some of these women come with university degrees from their home countries and take up jobs as they arise. Many of these women work as live-in caretakers for the elderly.

Objective
The project of the association is the socio-familial and intercultural integration of migrants in Portugalete, Bilbao. 

Activities

The activities are organised on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month, from 17:00 to 19:30, in the premises of the parish of Nazareth. They focus on three principles:  to welcome, to integrate and to settle down.

To Welcome

  • Primary attention: Welcoming without discrimination of country, language or religion etc.
  • Meetings for:
    • General information on Spanish culture and way of life
    • Accompaniment to and orientation in social services and health care (registration, housing).
    • Socialising
    • Orientation on courses to improve their work
    • Various workshops and talks, etc.
  • Pastoral: To try to keep in mind and help not to forget about the practices, memories, experiences  migrants learned and lived in their countries of origin and in the different religions, which generally are: Christian (Catholic, Adventist, Pentecostal, Evangelical) and Muslim. So that all can unite to pray to the same God.

To integrate

  • Exchange of cultures
  • Presentation of the different projects:
    • Participation in important events of the Town of Portugalete.
    • Collaboration with projects of the Portugalete Town Council or other local associations regarding immigrants (Caritas, Doctors of the World, Cosmopolis, etc.). Also with the Services that depend on the Basque Government and the Provincial Council, Lambide (employment service of the Basque Country), Immigration Service to resolve or guide in the processing of papers, etc.
    • Participation at the level of the Basque Autonomous Community in events such as cultural week, congresses and exhibitions related to immigration.
    • Projects for social and labour integration:
      • Workshops
      • Job placement: meetings with families who are looking for a domestic worker, to check conditions, select people, make a certain follow-up, etc. (outside the association's meetings)
  • During the Sunday encounters: games and tutoring in the Basque language for the children, talks.
  • Training (health, social, religious, psychological, educational, etc.).
  • Raising awareness of the immigration issue in educational centres:
  • Members of the association giving testimony of their migratory experience to students (Ballonti Institute, Xaverian Centre).
  • To prepare the "people on the move" who are in the Association to take the reins and initiatives of the Association.

Enraiza

  • Exchange of cultures through :
    • Folkloric performances : dances, "Encendido de Faroles" (it has been celebrated since 2008) or "Fiesta de la Luz" (the 2nd Sunday of December).
  • Information on customs, language, geography, etc.
    • The "Rice Festival" in which each nationality makes a different rice dish typical of their country, followed by a rice degustation.            
  • Gastronomy and Leisure: Dinners and snacks of fraternisation. Excursions to get to know the environment.
  • Integration of the children in the field of education, dances and theatre.

Results

The experience of welcoming them helps them to have confidence and to be able to tell their difficulties, their dreams and their motivations to migrate, and to be a little happier.        

 

 

El contexto

En 1999 surge en Portugalete (Bilbao, País Vasco) la necesidad de atender a los inmigrantes que están llegando a nuestro pueblo, casi todos de origen colombiano, que vienen en condiciones muy precarias en busca de trabajo. La mayoría, mujeres que han dejado en su tierra padres, hermanos e hijos. Muchas son pioneras, otras intentando una reagrupación familiar y sobre todo una vida digna. A partir del 2001, llegan muchos más de otros países de América Latina. También parejas jóvenes o madres solteras con hijos pequeños muchos de ellos nacidos en el País Vasco. Casi todas ellas y ellos trabajan en servicio doméstico. Algunas de estas mujeres vienen con títulos universitarios de sus países y van aceptando los trabajos que surgen. Muchas de estas mujeres trabajan como internas cuidando personas mayores, en general dependientes.

El objetivo

El proyecto de la asociación es de integración socio-familiar e intercultural de los migrantes de Portugalete, Bilbao.

Las actividades

Las actividades se organizan los 1º y 3º domingos del mes, de las horas 17 a las 19:30, en los locales de la parroquia de Nazaret. Y se centran en tres principios:  Acoger, Integrar, Enraizar.

Acoge

  • Atención primaria: Acogida sin discriminación de países, lenguas o religión etc.
  • Reuniones para:
    • Información
    • Acompañamiento y orientación para los servicios sociales y atención sanitaria (empadronamiento, vivienda)
    • Confraternización
    • Asesoramiento para cursos con vistas a mejorar el trabajo
    • Cursillos y charlas diversas etc.
  • Pastoral: Se procura tener muy presente y ayudar a no dejar las practicas, recuerdos, vivencias aprendidas y vividas en sus países de origen y en las distintas religiones que por lo general son: Cristianas (católica, Adventista, Pentecostal, Evangélica) y Musulmana. De manera que todos se puedan unir a rezar al mismo Dios.

Integra

  • Intercambio de culturas
  • Presentación de los distintos Proyectos:
    • Participación en momentos importantes del Pueblo de Portugalete
    • Colaboración con proyectos del Ayuntamiento de Portugalete o de otras asociaciones locales en lo referente a inmigrantes (Cáritas, Médicos del Mundo, Cosmópolis, etc.). También con los Servicios que dependen del Gobierno Vasco y la Diputación, Lambide (servicio de empleo del País Vasco), Servicio de Extranjería para  resolver u orientar en la tramitación de los papeles etc.
    • Participación a nivel de la Comunidad Autónoma Vasca, en eventos como la semana cultural, congresos y exposiciones referentes a la inmigración.
    • Proyectos para la integración socio-laboral :
      • Talleres
      • Bolsa se trabajo: encuentros con la familias que piden algún servicio de trabajo, ver condiciones, seleccionar las personas, hacer un cierto seguimiento etc. (fuera de las reuniones de la asociación)
    • Durante las reuniones: juegos y refuerzo en el idioma euskera para los niños, charlas.
  • Formativas (sanitarias, sociales, religiosas, psicológicas educativas etc.)
  • Concienciación sobre la cuestión de inmigración en centros educativos:
    • Miembros de la asociación van a dar testimonio de su experiencia migratoria a los alumnos y alumnas (Instituto Ballonti, Centro de las Javerianas)
  • Ir preparando a las “personas en movimiento” que están en la Asociación a tomar las riendas e iniciativas de la Asociación.

Enraiza

  • Intercambio de culturas por medio de :
    • Actuaciones  folclóricas : bailes, “Encendido de Faroles”(se lleva celebrando desde 2008) o “Fiesta de la Luz” (el 2º domingo de Diciembre)
  • Información sobre costumbres, lengua, geografía etc.
    • La “Fiesta del arroz” en la que cada país hace un arroz diferente típico de su país, para después una degustación de arroces,             
  • Gastronomía y Ocio: Cenas y meriendas de confraternización. Excursiones para conocer el entorno.
  • Integración de los niños en el campo de la educación, en bailes y en teatro

Los resultados

La experiencia de acogida les ayuda a tener confianza y poder contar sus dificultades, sus sueños y sus motivaciones para llegar a nosotros, y ser un poco más felices.

Migrants

According to the activity, around 40-60 migrants come to the bi-monthly meetings, they come from 16 different nationlities: Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Paraguay, Chile, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Ecuador, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Morocco, Senegal. Women reprensent about 60%, men around 25% and children 15%.

In the 20-year activity, the membership book counts around 500 signatures. Some are still in touch, others have gone back to their home country. Some of nationalities that once were among the beneficiaries were: Portugal, Albania, Romania, Ghana, Algeria, Pakistan, Argentina, Brasil.
