The 24th Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) convened at the UN Headquarters in New York from April 21 to May 2, 2025, bringing together Indigenous leaders, advocates, and dignitaries from around the world. This year’s session, attended by high-ranking officials including the UN Secretary-General, focused on the theme: “Implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples within UN Member States and the UN System: Identifying Good Practices and Addressing Challenges”.
Representing the Society of the Sacred Heart were Margaret Mwarili, UN-NGO Representative, and Apolline Bouts, an intern with the UN-NGO office. The forum was energized by a rich exchange of interregional and intergenerational perspectives, with more than 100 side and parallel events deepening the dialogue. Notably, for the first time, a high-level discussion centered on the rights of Indigenous women, marking a significant step forward in the global conversation on Indigenous rights and inclusion.
