Background

In the Sacred Heart School of Lo Espejo (Santa Olga), violence was a daily matter among students that could not manage conflict resolution with dialogue, peacefully and respectfully.

Objective

Structure a class routine to handle complex school situations.

Activities

Circle methodology: A method to teach students to handle complex situations in a school context (low marks, bad-behaviour, students’ conflicts). The Circle is run from Monday to Thursday right after lunch and during lunch break. Afternoon teachers allow 10 minutes of their lesson to arrange chairs in a circle – the lesson starts in a clean and cozy atmosphere. Children have then 30 minutes from 13.45 to 14.15 do discuss and listen in a democratic and pacific way to school issues. The discussion is moderated by the teacher. There is no daily plan discussion, the debates follow the daily needs of the students. There are however, some structured days such as the games day, the congratulations day or the reflection day.  The 30 minutes circle session ends with prayer, and the proper lesson starts.

Outcomes

The 30 minutes of the Circle Method has become a daily necessity. Peace and respect among students have become routine.
