Background
The European Network of Sacred Heart Schools gather Sacred Heart Schools from 11 European countries: Austria, Belgium, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Malta, Poland, Italy, Scotland and Spain. The network seeks to actively support the member schools in the development and implementation of their shared Sacred Heart ethos. Among their aims is the promotion of students' social awareness which impels to action.
Objective
To stimulate debate, get ideas, ask questions and raise awareness on European issues of justice, peace and integration of the creation.
Activities
1. European Immigration Crisis (Ireland, France, Spain).
Four schools of the Sacred Heart, St. Catherines College, Armagh (Nothern Ireland), La Perverie, Nantes (France), Sagrado Corazon, Zaragoza (Spain) and Mount Anville, Dublin (Ireland) engaged in an European Union multimedia Erasmus Plus project to discuss the migration crisis in Europe. They came together to investigate immigration and its impacts across Europe and within their own communities. The students debated the importance of the European project, the ideals of the European Union, discussed in depth whether or not the Schengen agreement is still viable, questioned the border policies of member states.
- Creation of a blog (E-ship) to upload resources on the European migration crisis (post video updates, add links to interesting news stories, chat and debate issues).
- Training of students in film-making skills.
- Creation of short films on the subject of immigration
- Presentation of students' short films at the Market place Theatre in Armagh in Spring 2017 (Nothern Ireland).
- Visit of students to their peers' countries.
Outcomes
- Students are better informed on justice and peace issues (migration, poverty, loneliness, disability)
- Students have acquired film making skills
- Students have become more open-minded about the challenges and opportunities afforded by immigration (including visits to their peers in their countries)
- Students have developed in personal growth
- Students have committed to intellectual engagement
