For several years I had felt the desire to go on a humanitarian mission. I wanted to travel while also feeling I was useful. Unlike a tourist trip, volunteering allows us to be immersed in a culture different from our own, and to create very strong bonds in spite of the language barrier.
I spent about three months in Egypt. I discovered great poverty but also the value of hospitality. The people I worked with and met showed me a lot of affection and by the end of my volunteering experience I was part of their family. Through volunteering I opened my heart more; and this experience allowed me to understand how hard life is in poor countries and that one should not be judgmental. Each person has his or her own story. Both my mind and my heart have been opened up to the world.
I would advise everyone to take the opportunity to undertake this kind of project because it is a real chance that brings us great enrichment and very good memories. Don't be afraid to go into the unknown. We always have fears or prejudices. In the end, we come out happy because by being there, we see with our own eyes a reality that is completely different from our own.
