Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her lifelong defense of international law and human rights. The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized her efforts to promote peace through accountability for the world’s gravest crimes.
A South African lawyer of Indian Tamil descent, Pillay began her career defending activists under apartheid. She later became a pioneering international judge: President of the Rwanda genocide tribunal, a judge of the International Criminal Court, and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.
Her legacy is especially significant for victims of sexual violence. At the Rwanda tribunal, she helped establish that rape and propaganda can be prosecuted as part of genocide and crimes against humanity.
The Nobel Committee praised her rigor, integrity, and courage at a time when wars are rising and international courts are under political attack. Its message is simple: peace is impossible without justice.
Pillay’s award affirms a powerful truth—accountability is not an obstacle to peace; it is its foundation.
