Mobile library project - JPIC Learning Hub

Access to books or spaces encouraging reading are limited for many Vietnamese youth, especially those in rural and marginalised areas. Limited libraries and the dominance of technology reduce opportunities for young people to cultivate reading habits, critical thinking, and social engagement. Families often lacke resources to provide books at home, and communities have few safe environments for youth development.

The Mobile Library project, in collaboration with Ai Tam Educational Organization (ATEO), reached remote areas. Activities included reading programs, book and film critical discussions, science experiments, and homework support. The project also integrated clubs on sex and gender education, art, music, and traditional games. An “Q&A Box” allowed youth to ask sensitive questions anonymously, while counselling sessions provided individual support for those facing stress or family difficulties. New initiatives went beyond the initial plan, such as donating books to unreached communities, helping parents set up home bookshelves, and offering career counselling and vocational referrals.

The project exceeded expectations, reaching 2.019 people instead of the planned 400. Children developed stronger interest in reading and respect for books; parents became more engaged, often reading alongside their children; and communities began establishing their own mini-libraries. Strengths of the project included its holistic approach combining literacy, recreation, and psychosocial support. Overall, the Mobile Library became more than a book service, it fostered a culture of reading, community involvement, and empowerment, offering a transformative space for vulnerable youth and families.
