Overview

Objective 

To change rural Karamojong culture from one of domestic violence to domestic peace.

Activity

Every 3 or 4 months a group consisting of 5 to 7 older men with 3 or more wives each come to Naoi for a 2 day workshop. The man and the first 3 wives are invited.  They speak with great honesty and as a result of being listened to respectfully, the man, who is usually the one who solves problems by violence (though often the wife can also beat her children for any small mistake) is ready to listen to his wives and understand what he has never understood before.  One old man who had never been inside a church before and was impressed by the life-size crucifix in Naoi, said, “I think we need a crucifix in our home.  It will help me remember this time and keep me from beating.”    This project also works in collaboration with an NGO against forced marriages, usually of very young girls to old men who already have many wives.              

 

El objetivo 

Cambiar la cultura rural de Karamojong de una cultura de violencia doméstica a una cultura de paz doméstica.

Las actividades

Cada 3 o 4 meses, un grupo de 5 a 7 hombres mayores con 3 o más esposas viene a Naoi para un taller de 2 días. Se invita a cada hombre y a las 3 primeras esposas. Hablan con gran honestidad y, al ser escuchados con respeto, el hombre, que suele ser el que resuelve los problemas con violencia (aunque a menudo la esposa también usa la violencia con sus hijos) está dispuesto a escuchar a sus esposas y a comprender lo que nunca antes había entendido.

Un anciano que nunca había entrado en una iglesia y se quedó impresionado por el crucifijo de tamaño natural de Naoi, dijo: "Creo que necesitamos un crucifijo en nuestra casa. Me ayudará a recordar este tiempo y a evitar que use la violencia".  Este proyecto también trabaja en colaboración con una ONG contra los matrimonios forzados, normalmente de chicas muy jóvenes con hombres mayores que ya tienen muchas esposas.
