Background

The Society’s commitment to the poor and the marginalised permeates so much of the life of the Society, at individual level choice, as  local communities and as a Province community.

Objective

To set up a community in an area of urban deprivation, Walker, Newcastle

Activities

Parish activities

  • Getting to know parishioners and staff of next door primary school
  • Practical help with children's party and New Year dinner for the elderly etc.
  • Running of Vinnie's Café to foster meetings elderly members of the parish community to meet as well as young mothers and their children
  • Running of cooking classes with a small group of women before Christmas.
  • Involvement in international evenings and parish celebrations at Christmas and Easter

Capacity and Empowerment training

  • A health and wellness training programme
  • Capacitar for kids’ programme, in collaboration with the school chaplain and school counsellor. The groups consisting of girls who had either behavioural problems or issues connected with anxiety or confidence.
  • A four session training to staff in both the high school and primary school.
