Background
Historically, the Korean media have been colluding with the remnants of the pro-Japanese dictatorship and chaebol (a large Korean family-owned business conglomerate), ignoring the lives of citizens and misleading public opinion by constantly producing logic to defend the 1% privileged class.
In an era where anyone can create, process, and disseminate information, false, distorted, and biased reports are also overflowing. In an era where lies and truth are mixed, and it is difficult to distinguish between news and non-news, it is said that media consumption patterns have changed as long-term outings are restricted due to COVID-19. Large media clashing with politicians and indiscriminate fake news of YouTubers are running through the phones.
The majority of the people in Korea have a cell phone. 95% of them are smartphones. 5% is for regular cell phones. Fake news from the big media and reckless YouTubers with politics are on the rise.
Fake news caused conflicts between generations and between men and women and caused alienation due to the gap between the rich and the poor. We were conscious of our defenseless exposure to fake news that threatens democracy and the urgency of social change. In that sense, in June 2021, the provincial heavenly body listened to a lecture on the press through ZOOM hosted by JPIC, and decided to support civic media organizations that are trying to create a culture that finds and announces truthful news, and allows citizens to accept correct information.
