Background
Among the goals and criteria that articulate the essence of the Sacred Heart school in the United States and Canada, Goal Three matches JPIC commitment: Commitment to educate to a social awarness which impels to action.
- The school educates to a critical consciousness that leads its total community to analyze and reflect on the values of society and to act for justice.
- The school offers all its members opportunities for direct service and advocacy and instills a life-long commitment to service.
- The school is linked in a reciprocal manner with ministries among people who are poor, marginalized and suffering from injustice.
- In our multicultural world, the school prepares and inspires students to be active, informed, and responsible citizens locally, nationally, and globally.
- The school teaches respect for creation and prepares students to be stewards of the earth's resources.
Activities
- The 'Hearts for Humanity' project is an ongoing entrepreneurship program for the 2nd Preparatory. The vision is to provide learning activities which empower students to effectively change the world. Students learn to ideate, create, develop and market goods and events that have the potential to benefit society.
- The Rosary New Orleans collaborates with the organisation H2O for Life Schools to raise funds to build a water well for a school in South Sudan. During this project, students first read about the world water crisis and social entrepreneurs and then developed prototypes of products they could make that would be feasible, profitable and desirable to customers. The students learned to market the goods while completing a financial literacy program sponsored by IberiaBank. At the end of the semester, funds raised from the students' products will contribute to the construction of a well, allowing Sacred Heart girls to make a difference in the lives of their peers in Africa.
