
Background
Sophia Polytechnic, Mumbai, is one of the institutes selected under the "Community Development through Polytechnics" scheme of the government of India which helps in skill development of persons of the weaker sections of society in order to provide them with the possibilities for either employment or self employment so that they can earn their livelihood. Under the Community Development Scheme, the province has five rural centres where they run specific skill-based courses.
Objective
To provide skills training to underprivileged women and youth.
Activities
- To identify needy youth and women who require skills.
- To conduct skill-training: welding, tailoring, beautician course and bag-making
Results
- About 500 women and youth have enrolled and attended skill-training.
- On completion of the training, beneficiaries receive a government recognised certificate.
