
Background
The social level of the San Luis Potosí inhabitants is low and their houses have limited spaces for family harmony. Violence and insecurity have increased and set the area to the 9th position as criminal incidence in the country and there has been an increase of 37% of denounced crimes. This situation has had negative repercussions in other areas: family, school and street life. Poverty has increased and leisure spaces have decreased.
Objective
Provide peace education to generate healthy community relationships among children and their environment with a Popular Education methodology.
Activities
- 27 peace education sessions for children divided in 9 groups in three state schools 1 hour per week.
- 30 peace education sessions for children in two open spaces (Sauz and Arboledas de Tangamanga), at evening times once a week
- The issues addressed were: identity, self-esteem, team work, communication, decision taking, conflict resolution.
- Actions inclued: group dances, community games, emotion lights
- Organisation of a sport day between two high schools (110 students)
- 30 JPIC sessions for children in two open spaces.
- Some of the addressed issues: the creation of the universe; appreciation of the universe and the planet; we are part of a life system; care for the material resources.
- Creation of a school citizens'comittee in two state schools. Issue addressed: water (because of water shortage)
- Organisation and running of two summer camps.
- Organisation of the Peace Feast Day.
- Five training workshop for parents on gender equity; what is peace;
- Organisation of 4 leisure activities for parents and children together: Mothers' Day, Death Celebration Day, Christmas Message, Children's Day
Results
- Group relationships improved 60%: children understand that even if they are not friends with each other, they can still work/study together as classmates.
- 40% of the children manage to solve their problems talking about what happened and looking for the support of an adult.
- 90% of children assume their responsabilities in the organisation of the Peace Feast Day
- 15 children formed the school citizens' comittee in each of the two schools
