Background

One of the five goals of the Sacred Heart School is “Social Awareness which Impels to Action”. This goal is taken seriously at Stuartholme and the students are provided with many opportunities to engage with the wider community with all its diversity. The students themselves come from a diversity of backgrounds as we are enriched by the presence of approximately 150 boarders drawn from regional Queensland and overseas as well as our cohort of indigenous students.

Activities

  • "JPIC advocacy group" (since 2015). This group’s main focus is to raise awareness and educate the school community about justice issues that occur at a local, national and international level. It is a student-led group with a nominated Captain and an Executive Committee who select the issues to be studied and the type of action that will be taken in the community. In 2015, human trafficking (fair trade) and asylum seekers and refugees were the two topics selected. Actions included

    • raising awareness on assembly,

    • letter writing campaigns,

    • attending rallies, and

    • gathering signatures for petitions in the school and wider community.
