Background
Among the goals and criteria that articulate the essence of the Sacred Heart schools in Australia-New Zealand, Goal Four matches the JPIC commitment: social awareness which impels to action. Studies will help to attain knowledge about social and moral issues. But knowledge of injustices is not enough.
Objective
To given opportunities to reach out directly to the needy - collecting food for the hungry, working with the elderly, tutoring the young, comforting the sick.
Activities
- Year 7&8: Sustainability and the interconnectedness of creation.
- Year 10: Specific connection to the work of Caritas and a curriculum topic focusing on children in the workforce and Fair Trade choices.
- Year 12: JPIC as a curriculum topic looking at depth at the principles of Catholic Social Teaching and an individual research project. Also the opportunity for each student to undertake 30 hours of voluntary service with associated reflection.
Outcomes
- Students were grateful for all - the Year 13 Leaders, the staff, classmates, teachers.
- Students were thankful and show gratitude by being attentive to all with whom life is shared daily.
