Background
Fenham, Newcastle (northern England) is a council estate where there is high unemployment, considerable deprivation and a high incidence of crime.
Objective
To improve the quality of life for the members of the local community of a council estate (Fenham, Newscastle) by helping people go futher, providing support, direction, hope, encouragement and praise.
Activity
- providing advice on how to keep out of debt
- encouraging people to use the Credit Union (established by the Resident Association)
- helping to improve qualifications including IT
- help with homework for younger members
- providing relief through social events and activities
Outcome
The whole project has grown considerably, with two extensions having been added to the original building and provision made for all ages in the area to use the building and so create a sense of community which did not exist before.
