Background
In the mid-1990's, when Spanish RSCJ opened the Salamout centre, it accommodated young children and provided an active program for its hosts. Since their departure in the 2010's, the centre became short of a full program of activities and turned into a simple child-minding place. In addition, the young children became yound adults with different needs. The centre needed to be revitalised and reorganised.
Activities
In 2023, the Salamout centre engaged in works of renovation that offered new spaces for educational activities for its hosts. The new kitchen has been central in teaching daily chores to the hosts that they now also reproduce autonomously in their homes. Thanks to the neat garden and the new outdoor playground, the hosts enjoy more freedom in their movement and present a better capacity in their physical actions. And, the Montessori toys have stimulated their academic skills.
Results
The participants feel they are important for it is their responsibility to attend their classes, and people show care for them. Their teachers have grown their interest in the special need person development and attended training to better respond to their needs. With the renewed dynamism of the Samalout centre the image of its hosts has shifted from people with disabilities to persons with engagement, creativity and interactive.
