The project at the women jail in Brieva (Ávila) provided a holistic approach to supporting female inmates, combining carpentry capacity-building and labor-related skills with a supplementary focus on social abilities that often deteriorate during incarceration. Ten women participated in the program, learning woodworking, tool use, and carving, as well as health and safety at work (chemical product risks, protection, protective equipment), and responsibility taking. These skills were worked both in pairs and small groups. Their handcrafts (flower pots) were sold at local markets. The project also engaged in a crib contest (launched by the city council) where the participants could express their creativity freely and strengthen teamwork. The project had a flexible admission policy that welcome participants throughout the term as it accommodate different skill levels through individualised training plans. The project helped challenge traditional gender norms, as carpentry is often viewed as a male-dominated field, thus providing an empowering experience for the women. While initially intended for 20 participants, the project benefited from a smaller group size. Focusing on 10 women allowed for more personalised support and deeper engagement, eliminating the need for frequent participant rotation. Ninety percent of the women who attended for over six months showed increased self-esteem and improved social skills, such as conflict resolution and respectful communication. Overall, the project successfully balanced skill development with social rehabilitation, preparing participants for a smoother reintegration into society.
