Background

Given the context of marginalisation that prevails in the suburbs of the city of Guadalajara, with high rates of violence and inequality, the Centros Educativos Oblatos (CEO) have centred their JPIC option around 4 transversal axes:

  • Gender Equity,
  • Care for the Environment,
  • Culture of Peace, and
  • Promotion of Justice.

Objective

The co-construction of inter-institutional spaces, as a network alliance, to collaborate and generate proposals that promote and encourage the values that give us life and guide our educational mission, in the key of JPIC.

Activities

We organise four thematic days a year, one for each axis, taking there international day to raise awareness and take action. Each year, different activities are carried out on each day, for example: workshops, talks, fairs, marches, concerts, campaigns, etc. both inside the community centre and especially in public spaces in the Oblatos area.

The four days take place throughout the year around the following international dates. However, many times activities do not run just on the international day, but throughout the whole month in question.

  • 8 March: Gender Equality
  • 5 June: Care for the Environment
  • 21 September: Culture of Peace
  • 10 December: Promotion of Justice and Human Rights.

In 2020 (COVID) women's day was held at the beginning of March, together with the national strike #9M. "A day without us". The other events were carried out through digital media: Facebook, Zoom.

Results

The activities run during the thematic days have helped to raise awareness of the population on each of the issues, with children, young people and adults.

The participation of the population has been active, expressing the desire for peace or the commitment to care for the environment, inside and outside the area.

Practical learning:

  • women's dignity and gender roles,
  • waste separation and composting,
  • cooperative games for peace,
  • recognition and exercise of human rights.

It has been generating training spaces for educators who participate in community settings and/or civil organisations, sharing experiences and favouring links on the way to the construction of alternatives together. It has foster them to participate in wider networks together with others.
