Background

Choose Life Home Base Care (CLHBC) is a community based organisation founded by the Sacred Heart Sisters in Moroto in 2007. Together with a group volunteer and educators CLHBC promotes positive living and care for HIV/AIDS people including children affected and infected. 

Objective

To provide comprehensive and holistic care and support services for the adults and children infected and affected with HIV/AIDS to improve their quality of life and enable them to choose life and live positively. 

Activities

I. Choose Life Home Based Care (adult programme)

  • Regular home visits (making sure they are taking ARVs, eating properly)
  • Individual counselling and individual review
  • Group meetings and sharing
  • Volunteers networking meetings
  • Psycho-social support
  • Referral to the hospital as needed.
  • Family Guidance/ counselling
  • Follow up in the voluntary counselling and test, in Moroto hospital.
  • Community awareness campaigns: to extend awareness on HIV/AIDS outside Moroto Municipality to prevent new infections and re-infections in three villages per quarter.
  • Income generating activities :Tailoring
  • World Aids Day district
  • Support on burials
  • Support for orphans (embraced by family)

II. School of Life (children programme)

  • Tuition support for the most needy
  • Provision of scholastic materials
  • School follow up with regular school visits
  • Psycho-social support
  • Domestic and family follow up through regular home visits
  • After school programme
  • Saturday activities
  • Holiday activities

Results

  • Stigma and discrimination is overcome 
  • Life is lived with dignity
  • A sense of solidarity among patients grows and there is readiness to help each other
  • Family spirit has gained the community (sense of belonging)
