Background

CEDIAM stands for Centre d’Éducation, d’Information et d’Accompagnement des Malades (Centre for Education, Information and Patient Support). It bases its activities on four pillars: awareness raising on HIV/AIDS; HIV voluntary screening; medical and psychological support and school tutoring for HIV orphans.

Objective

To improve health and life conditions of HIV/AIDS patients in Bongor.

Activities

1. Awareness raising on HIV/AIDS

  • CEDIAM runs awareness raising campaigns to limit spreading of HIV.
  • CEDIAM provides information on HIV/AIDS - means of infection, symptons, possible treatment.

2. Voluntary Screening

The Government's National HIV / AIDS policy is to provide free voluntary testing and care to all PLHIV (living persons with the HIV virus); the number of people requesting free HIV screening has been increasing. CEDIAM is a recognised centre for these medial services. Yet, funds are missing for the purchase of ARV pills and HIV tests.

  • Purchase of HIV tests
  • Purchase of ARV pills

3. Medical and Psychological Attention

  • Follow up of patients and their relatives
  • Provision of ARV pills

4. School Tutoring

  • School enrollment of orphan students
  • Tutoring

Outcomes:

  • Better life expectancy:
    • patients follow their medical treatment.
    • patients have learnt to accept their mediacal condition and limit virus spreading
  • Social reintregration:
    • patients' relatives have become supportive.
  • Education
