Background

A key goal of a Sacred Heart education in Australia-New Zealand  is 'a social awareness which impels to action'. At Kincoppal-Rose Bay, students are inspired to help others in need and actively engage in humanitarian initiatives.

Objective

Raise students' social awareness on indigenous culture and increase their humanitarian engagement. 

Activities  

  • GAP students and Year 11 (senior) students enroll in a 5-day camp at the Bowraville School, North Coast of NSW (high indigenous student percentage) conducted by the Kincoppal-Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart staff. 

  • Students of KRB give support in the implementation of the camp addressed to primary indigenous students of Bowraville School. 

  • KRB students actively participate in sport and recreational activities involving the presence of primary indigenous students of Bowraville School. 

  • KRB students provide language, visual arts, science and skills resilience to indigenous primary students of Bowraville School. 

  • KRB students give support in the distribution of breakfast, morning/afternoon tea and lunch to primray indigenous  students. 

Outcomes

  • KRB students increased their knowledge on indigenous culture. 

  • KRB students strengthened relationships with indigenous children. 

  • KRB students fostered their humanitarian engagement. 

Indirect Outcomes

  • Primary indigenous students improved their language, science and artistic skills. 

  • Primary indigenous students engaged in leisure activities (sports). 

  • Primary indigenous students receive regular nutritional intake for 5 days.
