Background
The Sony Foundation Camp for children with disabilities
The Sony Foundation Camp is a collaborative enterprise between Sacré-Cur Melbourne and Stuartholme School Brisbane and five other schools. The majority of the campers come from low socio-economic families who have little access to services like this Camp. The Camp is free to the families due to the generosity of the Sony Foundation.
Objective
The major aims of the Camp are to provide a camp experience for children with disabilities, as well as much, welcomed respite for their families/carers.
Activities
It is a three day Camp for children aged from five to fifteen who have intellectual and/or physical disabilities.
Each year recently graduated Sacré-Cur students become companions for the campers. This role involves complete responsibility for the daily care of their designated camper for the entire three day camp experience. The students are involved in an extensive training program which provides them with the necessary confidence to work with their campers. The students are supported in their role by volunteers from both the teaching staff and the wider school community. Thus, the Camp is a whole school social service initiative.
For many students the Holiday Camp is a significant learning and life experience.
