Background

The project run extra curricula programs to alleviate the disorientation, anxiety, stress and social isolation often youth challenge and that were exacerbated with the Covid pandemic.

Activities

The 450 students of the polytechnic received in their classrooms value-based sessions (Stress Management and the Effects of Peer Pressure and Social Media); the project-appointed counsellor provided support and orientation to 37 students with social and health issues; spaces of social connection were facilitated (yoga practice); and skill enhancement workshops mitigated the lack of professional practice during the Covid lockdown.

Results

Students showed increased abilities to managed their academic stress and pressure (they completed their courses), they grew in confidence, and felt accomplished and motivated (applied for job vacancies and gained employment). The occasions of social encounters provided joy, empathy and shared experiences where loneliness and anxiety faded away.

Some of the youth challenges are intensified when families lack economic resources to ensure their children a quality education; the project supported 24 scholarships to alleviate financial difficulties.

To note that the heavy agenda students tend to have limited the full implementation of the project activities (budget balance); the project will complete its support program in the following months
