Background
The Buana Mekar Training Centre at the PKBM School in Baleendah, is located in an area marked by widespread poverty and the lack of technical training options leave many at risk of long-term social and economic marginalisation. The school’s goal is to equip underprivileged young people with practical, marketable skills that increase their chances of employment and break the cycle of poverty.
Activities
The expansion of the centre meant the launch of a certified beauty course for 52 students aged 14-19 of low-income families. The school undertook renovation works and prepared an appropriate classroom equipped with the necessary materials, and it hired a qualified instructor to design and teach the curriculum. Additional efforts included marketing the new program through the school’s website and social media to attract students.
Results
The activities resulted in an immediate increase in student enrolment (initially planned for 20 students). The new beauty course not only broaden the vocational options of and provided technical knowledge for students but also boosted their confidence and sense of self-worth. By learning a marketable skill, they became better prepared to earn an income and contribute to their families’ well-being. Beyond skill development, the project fostered an inclusive and nurturing environment where students were treated with respect and given the chance to realise their potential. The experience strengthened community ties and opened new prospects for collaboration and job placement, laying the foundation for long-term sustainability and empowerment.
