St Theresa's Girls' High School Haregaon

Background

In Harigaon, a village in Ahmadnagar District in the State of Maharashtra, India, St. Theresa Marathi Medium Girls School was started in 1961 by the Society's English sisters. Ahmadnagar District is a drought-prone and comparatively backward district in the state of Maharashtra. Since its birth, St. Theresa Marathi Medium Girls High School has brought about a tremendous change in the district, especially in the lives of women. The school from the beginning ran a girls hostel whereby girls from all the surrounding villages could attend school and have a secure and safe place to study. Many economically poor girls, from the district of Ahmednagar, cities of Pune and Mumbai got the quality Sacred Heart education.

Many of the children now in our Marathi Medium School at Harigaon are the second and even third generation of girls who are / have been educated in this school (their mothers and, in some cases, even grandmothers had studied at St.Theresa Marathi Medium High School). At present, St. Theresa Marathi Medium School is from std. 5^th to 10^th and is only for girls.

It is a government-aided school, charging no school fess and only marginal hostel fees.

Nowadays, due to globalisation and information technology, parents even of the lower middle class and lower income groups aspire that their children should be fluent in English, even though the parents themselves are not well-versed in English.
