Background

The Outreach Commission exists to serve those in need through the work of committees of Parish volunteers who provide pastoral care, work for social justice, and serve people in need throughout the larger community.

Activities

Food Programs include:

  • Shelter Meal Program

Provide direct help to the hungry, needy and homeless of San Francisco. Volunteers to cook, deliver, and serve warm, nutritious meals for homeless members in the community. We gather every second and fourth weekend of the month. Believe that a shared meal is one of the most fundamental forms of human interaction and that a fine meal, carefully prepared, is an act of love. Recognise that the sharing of a great meal can be healing and transforming for both the body and spirit.

  • Brown Bag Lunch Weekends

On the next to last weekend of each month, empty lunch bags are distributed at the church entrances. The following weekend, homemade lunches consisting of a sandwich, fruit, cookies and a snack are deposited in the baskets at the entrances of the church at all weekend Masses. These lunch bag donations are then delivered to feed the men and women serviced by the St. Vincent de Paul Society Shelter. On average, 250 lunches a month are donated by the generous members of this parish.

  • Food Drive

Every third Sunday, parishioners are invited to bring nonperishable food items to Mass to support local food pantries.

  • Gubbio Project

The fourth Friday of every month at 6:30 AM,  parishioners of St. Ignatius Parish prepare, serve, and share breakfast with homeless men and women at St. John the Evangelist Church in the Mission District.

  • Sandwich Sunday

On Sandwich Saturday, volunteers come together to make 700 sandwiches for a local homeless shelter. We gather in the Xavier Hall kitchen at 9:00 am on the first Saturday of the month from September through June each year. It usually lasts no more than 2 hours.

They also organise JPIC formation for the adults of the parish.
