Background
Balwadi is an Indian pre-school run for economically weaker rural sections of the society, either by government or NGOs. Balwadis were developed as a part of the government of India's poverty alleviation programme by universalising education. The Sophia Nursery Balwadi was started in 1990.
Objective
a) To educate children of domestic workers in the area.
b) Empower the mothers of these children
Activities
For children
- Provide English lessons.
- To give them scope for extra activities like gymnastics and field trips and games.
- To encourage them in participating in the school Christmas concert where they get the opportunity to speak in public with confidence.
(indirectly) For mothers
- Provide English lessons for mothers until level 3 (those who need to learn basic English; grammar at a higher level etc.).
Outcomes
At the end of the Balwadi year the children leave the school as confident students to join the mainstream. They seek admission in all High schools and do us proud when they return with their reports often A grade.
Extra comments :
The Balwadi is no longer an extension of the Nursery as an outreach programme but well integrated with the rest of the school.
The working environment is further enhanced by the youthful spirit, and creative and innovative teaching of staff members.
