Objective

Migrant integration in the southwest island of Gran Canary.

Activities

Activities are implemented in the basement of the RSCJ community house.

  • Legal advice (all year round)

A lawyer comes once a week to the centre to respond to legal issues. Highlights migrants their rights and obligations

  • Literacy lessons (from October to June)

Some migrants have never been to school.

23% of the enrolled students

  • Spanish and cultural lessons (from October to June)

2 Spanish levels:

Beginner: 60% of enrolled students

Advanced beginner: 10% of enrolled students

Day trips to Spanish cultural museums (tomato museum, Colonial museum) and local gradens

  • Food Handling lessons

Outcomes:

  • Yearly, around 60-100 students improved their Spanish skills.

  • Migrants acquired self-confidence and autonomy to run daily errands and affairs.

  • Greater social integration of migrants.

  • Increased their potentiality for employment: yearly, around 5-10 migrants acquired food handling skills.

  • Improved relationships between migrants of different faiths.

  • Improved gender relationships between migrants.
