
Background
Nur Abadi is a school for children with disabilities and special needs. The school has never been able to provide a music program, even though the value of music for special needs children is well-established.
Objective
To foster the value of traditional music as therapy for special needs children.
Activities
- Purchase of musical instruments (arumba - a sort of hanging xylophone - drums, castanets);
- Musical training for classroom teachers to allow them to use the new equipment
- Teach children to play music instruments
- Teach children to take proper care of the instruments
- Maintenance of the music instruments
- Organise music concerts
Outcomes
- Children have learnt to work together to make music, voice, rhythm.
- Children have developed more self-esteem.
