Background

Nur Abadi is a school for children with disabilities and special needs. The school has never been able to provide a music program, even though the value of music for special needs children is well-established.

Objective

To foster the value of traditional music as therapy for special needs children. 

Activities

  • Purchase of musical instruments (arumba - a sort of hanging xylophone - drums, castanets); 
  • Musical training for classroom teachers to allow them to use the new equipment
  • Teach children to play music instruments
  • Teach children to take proper care of the instruments
  • Maintenance of the music instruments
  • Organise music concerts

Outcomes

  • Children have learnt to work together to make music, voice, rhythm. 
  • Children have developed more self-esteem.
