Objective

The project aimed to improve school results of 90 young people of the poor and vulnerable outskirts of Michaihue (city of Concepcion).

Activities

Its main activities were after-school tutoring for children/youth with high social and school risks (violence, school drop-out and repetition) and school extra-activities (breakdance, art and music workshops). In summer it also offered one-week summer camps. Their methodology included designing best practices to be replicated in different environments and developing positive agents for change.

Results

The results achieved included improved school concentration, homework done and enthusiasm to attend school. It also reinforced the children/youth self-esteem and mutual help and, in particular in the breakdance workshops, it built on their artistic capacities and daily time schedule. The breakdance artists were eager to organise shows for the community/school events.

In addition, the project also included mothers among their beneficiaries in an empowerment process. It stressed the integrity of family for a better sociality of the marginalised. About 30 mothers were trained for handcraft making. The capacitation result was a success but even better was the self-esteem they acquired, consequently encouraging them to share their know-how to other women.
