Background

The Associação Brincar e Crescer – Asbrinc - was created in 2004 to attend to the social and educational needs of the children and youth of Alto da Boa Vista (Rio do Janeiro). Maria Cecilia Rondon Amarante rscj is the president of Asbrinc.

Objective

To promote a culture of arts among teenagers in Alto da Boa Vista (Rio do Janeiro)

Activities 

Activities are carried out in the association premises in its  “Punto de Cultura”, where teenagers can benefit from a library, a computer room and music/video room.

1. Artistic skills

  • Training on the use of new technologies (audiovisual, video production, digital photography) - Oficina Creacio Video

  • Music courses

  • Painting courses

  • Theatre workshops

2. JPIC awareness raising

  • Debates, seminars on local environmental issues and its connection to local communities (Tijuca Forest).

  • Meetings on cultural differences

  • Seminars on teenager matters (school relationships, sexual abuse)

Outcomes

  • Teenagers have increased their social participation in local life: Organisation of a Cine Club in Alto da Boa Vista

  • Teenergers have inceased their skills with IT: production of two videos posted on youtube

  • One of the teenage girls participated in a national competition on Communication of Diversity run by the Ministry of Culture and got the seventh position among thousands of young participants.
