Background

Villa Jardín is a marginalised suburban area of the capital Buenos Aires.

Objective

To improve the quality of high school education in Villa Jardin. Indirectly, it aims to offer its beneficiaries, marginalised teenagers, new social and work opportunities and have them overcome the risk situation they live in (poverty, violence).

Activities

  • Renovation of the old school premises; expansion of the building:
    • a classroom for each of the seven grades of educational secondary school (purchase of furniture, gas and electricity network);

    • common spaces for students, teachers and family activities.

  • Professional courses: purchase of drills, vises.
  • IT courses: purchase of computers, digital screens, projectors.

Outcomes

The renewal of Villa Jardin school has made education more appealing for the neighbourhood youth recording a higher number of enrolments.

Besides the technical formation (based on popular education), the school has promoted students’ self-esteem and social responsibilities.
