The Sacred Heart Schools are committed to a social awareness which impels to action.
Objective
The Sacred Heart School of Mexico City is committed to teach its students respect for creation and prepares its students to be stewards of the earth's resources. Environmental sustainability is applied in the school environment.
Activities
- The school participates in national school contests on environmental issues
- The school registers in sustainable environmental education programmes run by ngos and associations to enhance their environmental units.
- Adaptation of the school infrastructure and premises to become a sustainable environment:
- efficiency in water consumption: installation of rainwater tanks
- efficiency in energy consumption: installation of solar panels
- waste management: installation of recycling bins
- gardening: green wall with plants representing the Society open heart logo
- the school bus runs on bio diesel fuel
Results
The school has received the recognition School in Action (Escuelas en Acción) from REEDUCA (Network of Schools for Education and Environmental Awareness) for their performance in environmental education for sustainability (2017).
The school has been credited as an Environmental Leader School (Escuela Líder Ambiental) which is the highest recognition of the Environmental Ministry (SEMARNAT) for the certification programme for Green Schools (2012)
School using rainwater for its own purposes
Energy costs and environmental impact reduced thanks to solar panels
Students have increased their awareness on their carbon footprint impact.
Students have included environmental responsibility in their citizenship.
